Electrical engineers are responsible for the generation, transmission and conversion of electrical energy (including renewable energy sources) in industries such as electricity supply, factories, chemical plants, mines, municipalities, railways, and harbours. Electronic engineers specialise in the control of electrical and mechanical robotic systems, particularly embedded controllers; the collection, processing and dissemination of information by computer and communication networks, such as cell phone networks, Wi-Fi and mobile data networks; and the design of computers and large software systems.

Minimum admission requirements for BEng

  • Write the National Benchmark Tests AQL and MAT
  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with admission to bachelor's studies, or an exemption certificate from the Matriculation Board
  • An average of at least 70% in the NSC (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Mathematics 70%
  • Physical Sciences 60%

Language marks that meet one of the following requirements:

  • English Home Language 40% OR
  • English First Additional Language 60% OR
  • English First Additional Language 50% AND Afrikaans Home Language 40% or Afrikaans First Additional Language 60%

Over and above the aforementioned requirements, candidates are subject to selection according to selection criteria.
