The different courses introduce students to the different specializations of anthropology that deal with human and social institutions and behaviour. Attention is paid to the applied dimension of the discipline and the need for the students to broaden their scope by taking supplementary courses in social work, social policy, community development, development studies. Particular attention will be paid to Cameroonian and African realities. Students are expected at the end of three years to have acquired the knowledge and skills needed to formulate and undertake independent research demonstrating their capacity to conceptualize social and cultural problems in a scientific manner.

Since its emergence as a discipline in the 1860s, anthropology has traditionally focused on questions of the origins of humans and the socially learned behaviour of different human groups. It has over the years sought to explain through ethnographic and analytic research, the complex nature of human society, individual and collective behaviour. In the spirit of Edward B. Tylor (1870), anthropology’s holistic vision of humans, permits it to examine issues of for harmony and conflict, social action, organization and disorganization, social relations, law, authority and power, social transformations, beliefs, social representations and knowledge systems, social institutions, economy, education, etc. The mission of this department is to transform the discipline into a tool or a mechanism that assists in the development of local communities taking into account their contemporary sensitivities and aspirations.
